How to Make Your Own Tumbler Template
A custom tumbler or travel mug is the perfect gift idea for any coffee lover. To add a personal touch, switch out the basic insert that comes with a standard tall coffee tumbler for one you designed yourself. You can design your own insert in any photo editing program with a simple blank template, or if you've got the artistic flair, you can go the low-tech route and design one by hand.
Things You'll Need
- 8--by-11-inch white paper
- Pencil Crayons
Designing a Template With a Computer
Open the die-line file downloaded as directed by your design-your-own-tumbler kit or from a template site, in your favorite photo-editing software. You can design it any way you want. Make a photo collage, add quotes or other text as you see fit. Be sure to stay within the borders, as they denote the shape of the finished product once it's wrapped around the tumbler.
Print your template. You can use plain white printer paper or invest in higher quality photographic paper for crisper, better-looking inserts.
Cut out your template. Use scissors to carefully cut along the border of the template. Make sure your cuts are as precise as possible so your finished product will be even.
Insert your template. Unscrew the bottom of the mug and carefully remove the default insert it came with. Slide yours in, being careful not to crease or rip it, and screw the bottom back on.
Creating a Template by Hand
Remove the original insert. Unscrew the bottom of the tumbler and carefully remove the default insert. Unroll it, cutting vertically along one side if necessary. Trace the shape of the unrolled insert onto a blank piece of paper.
Design your insert. Use markers, pencil, pen, pencil crayons or any other art supply to draw your own design on the template.
Cut out your template. Cut carefully along the border of the insert, making sure all your cuts are straight and even.
Insert the template into the bottom of the mug and screw the bottom back on.
- Tumblers with paper inserts are usually not dishwasher safe.
