How to Knit a Slouchy Hat With Straight Needles

    by AngieH

Slouchy hats are cute and popular hats to knit. You can wear the hats any time of the year, depending on the kind of yarn you use. They are uncomplicated to knit, and you can add patterns, color work or cables to create different looks, once you have mastered the pattern. For knitting novices, circular or double-pointed needles used for knitting in the round can be intimidating, but this pattern solves the problem by using straight needles only.

    Things You'll Need

    • 150 yards worsted weight yarn
    • Size 7 straight knitting needles
    • Size 9 straight knitting needles
    • Tapestry needle
    • Scissors

Cast on 70 stitches with size 7 needles. Work in knit 2, purl 2 ribbing until the hat is 2 inches long. Your last row will be a wrong side row, so you will be ready to work a right side row.

Switch to size 9 needles. Work the next 20 rows in short row fashion. For Row 1, knit 68 stitches. Then bring the yarn over the needle to the front of the work and back over the right needle to the back of the work. You will have created a yarn over on the right needle. Now turn your work and begin knitting the next row, leaving two stitches on your left needle.

Continue in the knit 2, purl 2 ribbing. Work in short rows for 20 rows. On each row, knit two fewer stitches than you did the previous row (so Row 2 will have 66 stitches, Row 3 will have 64 stitches, etc.). Your final row will have 30 stitches and be a wrong side row.

Work across all stitches. Work each yarn over with the stitch after it to avoid creating holes in your hat. Then turn and work across all stitches again. All stitches should now have been worked.

Work in knit 2, purl 2 ribbing until your hat measures 8 inches long. Then begin to decrease for the crown of your hat. For Row 1 of the decrease, knit 2, purl 2 together to the end of the row. Then work in knit 2, purl 1 rib until the hat is 8.5 inches long, ending with a wrong side row. For the next row (a right side row), knit 1, knit 2 together to the end of the row. Purl the next row. For the final row, knit 2 together across.

Cut your yarn with a 30-inch tail. Using the tapestry needle, pull the yarn through the remaining stitches and pull tight. This is the top of your hat. To finish your hat, sew the two free edges together from brim to top with the yarn tail and a tapestry needle . Weave in the yarn ends of the completed slouchy hat.

    • Modify the pattern to fit your style by adding different designs.
    • Be sure to check the hat to ensure it will fit your head or the head of the person you're making it for. Since everyone has a different size head you may need to use a different size of needles or weight of yarn to achieve the desired fit.
